Kisumu County Governor Anyang Nyongo is dead.
Governor Nyongo died at the Royal Marsden Hospital in London while undergoing treatment for prostate cancer.
According to his first lady the governor died at 2.15pm with close family members at his bedside.
“He has left us after a long struggle with prostate cancer. It is very sad for the family but we have accepted God’s will,” she said.
She said arrangements are under way to bring the body back home for burial.
Mrs Nyongo “the Governors death a huge loss to the family” she has urged Kenyans to pray for them.
Mr Nyongo has been out of the country since March this year after he survived a corruption case against him.
LAST PUBLIC APPEARANCE
He made only one public appearance in Kajiado during President Kenyatta’s tour of the county during Madaraka day and then flew out of the country hours later.
During his long absence, there were rumours that Mr Nyongo had stepped down from the his position as a Kisumu County Governor seat due to failing health.
However, those close to him insisted that he was still healthy, having fully supported the hand shake.
DEPUTY MOURNS NYONGO
Speaking to journalists after receiving the news of the death, Deputy Governor Dr. Matthews Ochieng Owili said he had spoken with Mr Nyongo on Friday and that he sounded weak.
He said Governor Nyongo would be remembered for his hard work and love for Kisumu people. Dr Matthew ochieng said Mr Nyongo would also be remembered for initiating various development projects
The deputy governor assured the people of Kisumu that the transition after Mr Nyongo’s death will be smooth.
He described the late governor as more than a personal friend.
