Grief as 47-year-old Form four student commits suicide after Ministry of education directed students to repeat classes

A form four student has committed suicide after Education Minister George Magoha said students would repeat a year as schools had closed in mid-March, three months after the school calendar had begun.

Nick Mutua, a student at Ndururumo secondary school in a suicide note blamed the country’s education system for frustrating his ambitions of training as a lab technician after his KCSE exams.

A dejected Mutua is alleged to have set his room on fire. He was rescued by neighbours and rushed to a private hospital in Buruburu where he died while receiving treatment.

According to his father, Jeremy Mutua, his son left a suicide note revealing that he’d rather take his life than repeat classes as he had overstayed in school.
